KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man in Likas was killed while crossing the road to buy breakfast.

It is understood that Lee Thien Yu, 62, had chosen to cross the road near SM Shan Tao instead of using the overhead bridge, located less than 100m away.

He was hit by an oncoming Toyota Fortuner and died on the spot.

The man's head was severed from his body in the Saturday morning incident.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said Lee's body had been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a postmortem while the 37-year-old driver had been brought in to have his statement recorded.

"We advise all pedestrians to be careful on the road and use overhead bridges or zebra crossings wherever available," ACP Chandra said.

He also urged drivers to be more careful while driving and to stick to speed limits.

He also said that they should slow down when driving near schools or in housing areas to avoid accidents.
