Fuel prices to be announced weekly from April.

(The Star)
Published : March 4, 2017

LARUT: The ceiling price for fuel will be announced weekly from April, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin.

He said the ceiling price would likely be announced on a Monday or Saturday for the week compared with currently, where prices are announced once a month.

He said this would enable consumers to know the current prices and avoid confusion.

"The Government is determining the fuel price to avoid it exceeding the correct market price.

"In reality, what Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and I are doing is to ensure that the people know what has been determined by the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia.

"It is up to the petrol station retailers to work with the association and ensure no one is left out of the concept we want to put in place," Hamzah, who is the Larut MP, told reporters after officiating the Parent-Teachers Association meeting of SK Bagan Baru on Saturday.

Hamzah said a notice highlighting the ceiling price would be placed at all petrol stations throughout the country to enable consumers to know if it had been raised or lowered.

Asked about the request by the Perak Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) to not undertake a ceiling price mechanism, Hamzah said his ministry had a discussion on the matter on Friday.

"They requested a number of additions to the aspect of margin (commission) which had been given to them to date.

"The Government will consider what they have requested in making a decision on whether we agree or otherwise," he said.

BUTTERWORTH: Those were the last words foreman K. Amarish received from his wife Tan Li Gin hours before she and their young son were found dead on a beach in Teluk Bahang on Penang island.

Amarish, 21, said he was not aware that the SMS had come in from Tan at 4pm on Wednesday until he got a call from his mother some three hours later that day.

“I was busy at work. It was only when my mother called at 7pm about them being missing that I saw my wife’s message,” he said.

A sinking feeling engulfed him when he could not get through to Tan.

“I suspected something bad had happened. So I asked to leave work early and went to search for them,” he said yesterday when met at his family’s house on the mainland, in Medan Kemuning near Jalan Raja Uda here, where the wake was held.

Tan, 21, who was 11 weeks’ pregnant with a second child, and Eonithin, three, were found washed ashore at the beach on the island at around 6.30pm on Wednesday.

The two were tied together with a pink raffia string in what seemed like a bid to keep them together in the water.

Amarish said he still found it hard to come to terms with their deaths.

“She was her usual self before that. She was a quiet person who kept things to herself.

“I don’t really know if she faced any issues. She seldom shared much with me as she did not like to trouble others,” he said.

The family remains baffled over her death.

Amarish added that they could not fulfil Tan’s wish to be an organ donor. As a drowning victim, her organs could not be harvested, according to doctors.

At the wake, Amarish and his twin brother Avinesh were seen placing a milk bottle, ice cream, soft drinks and sweets at the prayer altar. The offerings were Tan’s and her son’s favourite snacks.

“Maybe when they were alive, I was not able to provide well for them. I’m still doing my best to make them happy,” said Amarish as tears rolled down his cheeks.

His aunt Goh Lee Lee, 48, said Tan was a caring mother who loved children.

“That could be the reason why she tied her son to her, fearing that he could go missing.

“And she could have decided to bring her son along due to their strong bond,” she said.

The funeral procession will start at 10.30am tomorrow. Their bodies will be cremated at the Berapit Chinese Cemetery in Bukit Mertajam.

Meanwhile, Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Anuar Omar said a post-mortem showed no physical wounds on the bodies.

He said the case was still being classified as sudden deaths.

“We have taken statements from the family members. Even the deceased’s husband seemed perplexed by her action. We are still investigating,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: K. Amarish has been looking forward to the latest addition to his family. But it was not to be.

Instead, he lost his two closest family members – his 11-week pregnant wife Tan Li Gin and their three-year-old son A. Eonithin.

Tan and Eonithin were found washed ashore at the beach in Teluk Bahang at around 6.30pm on Wednesday.

The two of them were tied together with a pink raffia string.

It was believed that the raffia string was tied to keep them together in the water.

The couple, both 21, had been married for about three years and Tan was a housewife.

Amarish, a foreman, was at the Penang Hospital mortuary with about 10 family members and friends at around 12.20pm yesterday. He was in tears and could not speak to the press.

Amarish left the mortuary with his mother Goh May Lee, 44, and a male relative at 2.15pm before heading to the police station.

May Lee, in tears, described Tan as a quiet and hardworking daughter-in-law.

“She didn’t speak much at home, but she was a good girl. We can’t believe she’s gone forever.

“Her son Eonithin was so cute. He was the apple of our eyes,” said the distraught woman when met at the mortuary.

“She looked normal before the incident, and we did not hear of her facing any problems,” she said, adding that the family members were told about Tan’s pregnancy earlier.

May Lee, with whom Tan was staying with, said her daughter-in-law left home at around 11am on Wednesday with Eonithin.

“She seldom tells us where she goes but previously, she would be home after a few hours.

“We tried to call her later but there was no answer. We looked for them in Butterworth and on Penang island on Wednesday night but could not find them,” she said.

May Lee’s sister Lee Lee, 48, said she saw news of two bodies being found at Teluk Bahang on Thursday morning.

“I checked with May Lee and confirmed that Tan went out in a white T-shirt and pink shorts. After seeing the photographs, we suspected the bodies were that of Tan and her boy,” she said.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye said the mother and her son drowned.

“She was holding a Rapid Penang bus ticket in her palm when we found her body.

“We have ruled out foul play at the moment,” he told a press conference at North Seberang Prai police headquarters yesterday.
